Salt stains come off leather boots with a cloth dampened in white vinegar and water, pressed onto the mark rather than rubbed, then wiped over with plain water and left to dry well away from any heat. That part takes ten minutes. The part that costs people a good pair is the waiting: most of us let the boots dry by the door, notice the white tideline three days later, and by then the salt has had three days to pull the oils out of the leather from the inside.

Nobody is spreading table salt on the roads. The compounds in use are chlorides, and which one ends up under your boots depends on how cold it gets. Iowa State University Extension puts numbers on it in its guide to de-icing salts in the home landscape: sodium chloride, the plain rock salt, “is most effective when temperatures are above 15°F”, magnesium chloride “effectively melts ice and snow down to -13°F”, and calcium chloride keeps working at -20°F. A hard cold snap means a harsher compound underfoot, not just more of the same one.
What happens next is the same every time. Slush becomes brine, brine soaks into leather that is already wet, the water evaporates and the salt stays behind. It recrystallises at the surface and draws that ragged pale border along the exact line the boot was wet to, which is why the stain has a shape rather than a smudge.
The mark is only the symptom. Salt is a desiccant, and what it takes out of the hide is the moisture and the natural fats that keep the fibre flexible. Stripped of those, leather splits at the one place it has to bend, across the toes. That difference in how materials hold up is the whole reason we compared real leather and faux leather through a wet winter.
The first move is dry, and it comes before the water

Snow packs into the lacing and the eyelets, and melts there, carrying salty water into the spots a cloth reaches worst.
Take the laces out. Then go over the whole boot with a soft brush, dry, paying attention to the seams, the edge of the sole and the metal hardware, where grains wedge in and stay. This lifts off the salt that has not gone anywhere yet, and it makes everything after it easier.
Here is the rule almost everyone breaks: do not scrub. Dried salt is abrasive, and dragging it back and forth across a finish is sandpapering it with extra steps. Test whatever you are about to use on a hidden spot first, the inside face of the heel for instance, and give it a minute before you decide it is safe.
Speed matters more than technique. Blundstone, whose boots spend their lives in exactly this weather, keeps its own advice blunt: “commonplace substances like milk and salt are also highly damaging. In the event of exposure, clean the boots immediately.”
Vinegar and water, and the ratio worth arguing about
The household recipe everyone repeats is equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Blundstone’s boot cleaning guide is more cautious than that and suggests “mixing a simple 3:1 solution of water and vinegar”. Start with the weaker mix. You can always go stronger on a stain that refuses to move; you cannot undo a bleached patch on lightly finished leather.
Dip a cotton cloth and wring it hard. Damp, not dripping. Leather that gets properly soaked distorts as it dries, and you will have traded a white mark for a misshapen toe box.
Then blot. Set the cloth on the stain, press, lift, shift to a clean part of the cloth and go again. The salt lifts in layers rather than all at once, and patience here does more than pressure ever will. When the white has gone, take a second cloth with plain water to remove the acid residue, and a dry one straight after.
Worth being honest about the vinegar, since half the internet treats it as a miracle: it dissolves the crystals and dries the leather out at the same moment. It is a rescue, not a treatment. What you do afterwards is what decides whether the boot recovers.
Drying is where boots actually get ruined

Conditioner goes on in a thin layer, shoe held off the floor and something disposable underneath.
The radiator is the most expensive shortcut in shoe care. Blundstone again: “Never dry your boots by an open fire or artificial heat source, as this will cause the leather to harden, shrink and crack.” A hide that salt has already stripped is the last one you want to cook.
Do it the slow way. “Put some tissue paper inside your boots and leave them to air dry, to help maintain their shape when drying,” is the same guide’s line, and the paper is doing two jobs, drawing water out of the lining and holding the shape. Use plain paper. Newsprint goes soft when wet and prints itself onto pale linings.
Then wait, properly. Push a hand into the toe box: if it still feels cool and faintly damp, wax or cream applied now will seal that water inside the fibre instead of feeding it. Only when the boot is dry through does the conditioner go on, thin, worked in small circles until the leather has taken it. Blundstone suggests conditioning leather goods “2-4 times a year or as often as they need it”, and a salt episode counts as one of those whenever it falls. Suede and nubuck: vinegar stays in the cupboard
Everything above applies to smooth leather. On suede and nubuck the vinegar comes off the table, because liquid acid on a napped surface tends to leave pale patches that are far harder to live with than the original stain.
Work dry for as long as you can. A suede brush, passed in one direction only, lifts the crystals out of the nap without flattening it, and a suede eraser handles the spots that stay put. Resist the urge to soak: suede that gets drenched and then dries too fast turns board-stiff and loses the velvet hand entirely. Once the boot is dry, brush back and forth to raise the nap again.
Blundstone’s suggestion for nubuck afterwards is the obvious one and the one people skip: “apply a nubuck water and stain repellent on the shoe to help prolong the life of your shoes.”

Removing salt is damage control. Keeping it from settling in costs less of everything. A water repellent goes on before the cold arrives, not the week you first see a tideline, and Blundstone’s position is that “it’s a good idea to waterproof boots regularly to protect the leather from staining”. Reapply after any serious cleaning too, since the cleaning takes the treatment off along with the salt.
The other habit is duller and works better than any product: keep two pairs in rotation. A boot that gets a day off dries out from the lining, and salt never finds a fibre that is already damp and waiting. It also means the pair you grab on a bad morning is the one built for it.
